NO WAY JOSE! RESTAURANT & BAR - Puerto Vallarta

No Way José! located on the edge of Zona Romatica area on 5 de Febrero (first street to the left after crossing over the Rio Cuale from el centro). This area of Vallarta is the older, charming Puerto Vallarta. Zona Romantica is Vallarta's most energized neighborhood with the south side beach, restaurants, bars, lounges and beach side cafes.

The menu features contemporary Mexican cuisine with the freshest ingredients bursting with flavor & fine dining quality.

After a day at the pool and a late afternoon massage, I was too relaxed to spend any time in the kitchen preparing dinner. Instead, I headed down the hill from my condo to one of my favorites – No Way Jose! with its soothing jewel toned walls, linen covered tables accented with tiny vases of fresh flowers and of course, Julie's smile and Jose's laughter.


Daniel, as charming and friendly as always, ordered for me this evening. Why make a decision if I don’t have to? He even ordered my martinis for me, refreshing pomegranate martinis with a spoonful of pomegranate seeds at the bottom of the goblet. Great, spot-on service the entire evening.


He chose the Tortilla Soup ($4US) for me as my starter. The generous serving of the classic comfort food had slivers of guillo chilies, chunks of avocado, sour cream and ranchero cheese. The tortilla strips retained their firm texture to the very last spoonful. The tomato based soup with chicken stock, jalapenos, cilantro and a pinch of cumin will have you asking for more!


For dinner, I had the Flank Steak Don José ($11US) – perfectly charred and so tender I cut it with my fork, no knife necessary. The steak was generously surrounded by grilled peppers, onions, and thin slices of chorizo sausage. The sides of freshly made guacamole and refried beans plus warm flour tortillas completed this fantastic entrée. Suggestion… add thin strips of the cactus used in your infamous nopal soup to the grilled vegetables served with the flank steak.


After another superb dinner, I was asked to join the owners, Jose & Julie, and friends from the States at their table. After another martini, several shots of Jose’s favorite tequila and 2 hours of stories & laughter, I decided to call it quits. Aah, another perfect day in paradise! I wish my return in April was not so far away.

NO WAY JOSE! RESTAURANT & BAR – Puerto Vallarta

No Way José has arch accented walls of gold, maroon, and yellow jewel tones. The 11 tables covered in white and maroon linens are accented with tiny vases of fresh flowers. The cozy bar comfortably seats 5. The menu features contemporary Mexican cuisine with the freshest ingredients bursting with flavor & fine dining quality. The very friendly & sexy staff moves with ease within the small dining room.

My friends, Jose & Jesus, joined me at No Way Jose! for dinner. Of course, we started with a few rounds of margaritas, blended to perfection.


For my starter, I had 2 Guero chilies ($6US) stuffed with small pieces of shrimp, lightly breaded and quickly deep-fried. The chilies resting on baby greens and tomatoes are served with a light aioli sauce. The mild, plump, pale yellow chilies (also known as Santa Fe Grandes) left behind a nice bit of heat!


My choice for dinner was Xochimilco Spinach-Stuffed Chicken Breast ($11US) - a whole chicken breast stuffed with sautéed spinach, mushrooms, bits of garlic and gouda cheese. The breast seared for color was sautéed to a juicy perfection. An unusual finishing of corn truffle sauce was generously drizzled over the chicken. The slightly sweet, earthy flavor of the corn truffle sauce was magnificent. Steamed, crunchy carrots and white onion tossed in a light garlic butter sauce and a small flower of mashed potatoes were the perfect accompaniments to the incredible chicken entrée.


Alejandro and Daniel “double teamed” our table, again providing excellent service – always with a smile!


Reservations are a must; had we not had a reservation, the wait for a table was over an hour. When I arrived I was greeted with a welcoming hug and smile from Julie. It's so good to be home!


Since my last visit in November, the 2nd floor dining room has been added allowing 80 additional diners the opportunity to experience the incredible magic coming from Chef Montes' kitchen. Tonight, it was a full house!

CHEEKY MONKEY DELI - St Paul

Cheeky Monkey Deli's wide, open space of bright, white tiles, red & glossy white walls, huge fireplace, chalkboard menus and an eclectic collection of “frame within a frame” artwork of Andy Warhol prints, comic book covers, record album covers and vintage black & white images welcomes you with open arms and huge smiles from the staff! There are no deep fryers hiding in the back making it very easy to enjoy the amazing aromas drifting from the kitchen, even after 14 months in business.

My friend, Beverly, was back in the City and we decided to return to one of our favorite casual evening eateries for breakfast. This was our first visit for breakfast BUT will not be the last!

Nick, our energetic and extremely friendly server, was spot-on with a recommendation - the seasonal quiche. Today, it was mushrooms, brie, and tidbits of roasted chicken in the fluffiest egg mixture. All this goodness was resting on a buttery homemade crust - the lightest and flakiest crust I have eaten in some time. Nick mentioned that they serve and incredible andouille sausage. He was right. The side of andouille sausage made locally in Cannon Falls MN has a snappy skin that explodes with flavor. The lean sausage was surprisingly juicy; I'd expect nothing less. The delicious dark roasted organic coffee from Equal Exchange was a never-ending mug of happiness.

Their slogan "Meat & Drink" is so fitting. Aah. . .another fantastic meal and a perfect way to start the day!

3 MONKEY'S PUB & GRUB - Minneapolis

3 Monkey's Pub & Grub is located on the north end of “Eat Street” in the space once occupied by Bali. The new eatery (owned by 3 brothers...hence 3 monkeys) underwent a minor fluff – the Balinese red is now lime green, splashes of tropical green from an array of floor plants, a ½ wall around the register & service area near the kitchen and 12 flat screen TVs. Are 12 more TV screens in addition to the one that was already above the bar really necessary?

TC and I decided to start our evening with B3W’s (beer battered buffalo chicken wings) that were tossed in a spicy sauce. Perfect - Crispy and moist with the right amount of heat left behind. There are 3 other sauces to choose from: these include Asian sesame, BBQ and mild buffalo.

We chose burgers for dinner. 3 Monkey's uses Black Angus beef in their juicy burgers. The burgers arrived slightly charred, a touch of pink in the center and a generous side of kettle chips. Just the way I like it! They offer the usual toppings of lettuce, tomato and onion, but there’s an extra charge. This is the first burger joint I can recall that charges extra for the garden. Odd?

3 Monkey's menu has a nice selection of appetizers, salads, burgers, pizza, pasta and desserts. The friendly service is attentive; however, one suggestion . . .let your guests remove their jackets, actually sit down and relax a moment before asking if we want something to drink. It is difficult to read a menu wearing gloves. The staff was still too new to answer questions about the menu and what vodkas are poured. Hopefully, this will come with more experience.

“Eat. Drink. Be Monkey.” is their catchy slogan. A very casual & tasty eatery; I’ll wait a few weeks before I return, but I’ll return.

BANANA CANTINA - Puerto Vallarta

Banana Cantina is located in the Zona Romantica area of Vallarta, the older, charming Puerto Vallarta, on the corner of Pulpito and Amapas. Zona Romantica (aka Los Muertos) is Vallarta's most energized area with the south side beach, restaurants, bars, lounges and beach side cafes.

Debbi has comfortable restaurant with big, colorful splashes on the walls and international flavors on her menu, focusing on fresh seafood. Banana Cantina is located on the 2nd level of the building (above her snack shop - Coco Banana) a block from the Pacific Ocean. Banana Cantina was again named “Best Moderately Priced” restaurant in Puerto Vallarta by Virtual Vallarta, an honor they have earned four years in a row! Banana Cantina has become a mainstay in the casual PV dining experience.


As always, we were greeted with a basket of warm cheese and sesame bread nuggets - seconds & thirds are highly recommended! The basket arrived with a wonderful herb infused soft butter. Absolutely incredible.

My friends, Robin, Julie & Carol, and I were once again seated in the corner table high above the sidewalk and with a full view of the restaurant - best table in the house. As we sipped our perfectly blended libations, we nibbled on green olives stuffed with blue cheese. Yumm!

For our starter, we shared a plate of the spring rolls. These very light 'n flaky (almost oil-free) wraps were stuffed with chopped shrimp and tidbits of vegetables. The smooth teriayki sauce can be taken up a notch with the accompanying wasabi & slivers of pickled ginger.

For dinner, I selected the Puebla-style crepes - the delicate, almost translucent crepes had an abundance of shredded chicken breast, grilled mushrooms and white onions. The crepe was served split in 2 resting in a light poblano cream sauce and a sprinkling of yellow corn kernels. Excellent!

Our service was friendly and attentive; he was very helpful in explaining various dishes on the menu to my friends from the UK making their first visit to Puerto Vallarta. We all enjoyed ourselves eating & drinking for hours. Debbi, I hope to see you when I return in January!

GILMAR – Puerto Vallarta

Gilmar is located in Zona Romantica on Madero (2 streets before crossing the Rio Cuale into el centro). This area of Vallarta is the older, charming Puerto Vallarta. Zona Romantica is Vallarta's most energized neighborhood with the south side beach, restaurants, bars, lounges and beach side cafes.

Gilmar is a traditional, casual Mexican restaurant serving great food since 1979. At this simply decorated, comfortable eatery, the décor is not the focus – the food is!


For my starter, I had the made-to-order salsa prepared table side. Roberto was my sexy, witty server and “salsa chef.” His huge smile would melt even the chilliest of diners. Roberto created an incredible salsa from roasted tomatoes, fresh garlic cloves, white onion, cilantro, and roasted Serrano chilies. Based on my preferences and using a stone bowl, he mashed and blended the perfect salsa. A warm basket of homemade tortilla chips arrived from the kitchen just as he finished his creation. The secret to a great salsa is first roasting the vegetables & Gilmar knocks it out of the park. Delicious!


For dinner, I chose the Arrachera a la Parrilla (approx $9US) – a thin cut of flank or skirt steak rubbed with crushed garlic, oil, and coarse salt. The steak generally marinates for a minimum of 30 minutes & then it’s on to the grill. I believe Roberto told me Gilmar’s marinates the meat overnight. Prior to serving, the steak is drizzled with lime juice. Few spices, but huge flavor. The steak platter arrives with warm tortillas and 3 fantastic sides including grilled white onions, guacamole and refried beans... the perfect “foursome”.

Tonight, I was in the mood for dessert. I could not resist the Fried Ice Cream. The baseball size ball of vanilla ice cream is first dipped into foamy egg whites and then rolled in a combination of brown sugar, cinnamon and crushed “cornflake-like” cereal. It is deep fried for approximately 10 seconds creating a sweet, crisp blanket. The ice cream ball rests on a strawberry puree and is generously drizzled with a warm, dark chocolate sauce. The warm crust with the cool, creamy inside is out of this world.


An amazing meal at a fantastic price. I can honestly say I will be returning in January!

The very charming Alfredo “José” left River Café (another of my favorites in Vallarta) and opened this incredible eatery 3 weeks ago, realizing a 15-year dream. Good things come to those who wait! His giant personality & charisma will make you feel as if you've been friends for years.

Julie, his business partner, has extensive business consulting experience. Corporate America dealt her a "blow" when her department was eliminated. She and her husband opened a restaurant where No Way José! is currently located. Experiencing another life change, Julie was planning on closing her restaurant to return to the States when José approached her with a business plan she couldn't refuse. After numerous conversations, No Way José! was born. Her big personality and smile will only add to your dining experience.

Joining him from the River Café is Executive Chef Vicente Montes. Chef Montes has impressive start-up experience including Le Bistro, River Café, & Café des Artistes – all in Puerto Vallarta. Also joining the team in the front of the house is José's son, Emilio.

A roof-top expansion is underway. Nothing official, but I've heard a New Year's Eve celebration is being planned as the "christening" party. I wish I could be there!

I began my meal with the Sopa Montezuma (cactus & shrimp soup) - $4US. The soup has julienne strips of nopal cactus, tidbits of shrimp, white onion, and epazote in a delicate tomato based broth. Epazote has been used in a variety of Mexican dishes including soups, salads & quesadillas going back to the Aztecs. Incredible!

My main course was the Madellones de Res (beef medallions) - $13US. The 2 perfectly grilled, extremely tender medallions of beef rested on mashed potatoes accented with a hint of cheddar cheese & onion. The steamed, bit-sized nuggets of carrot, broccoli, and fingerling potatoes were screaming fresh! This amazing combination was surrounded by a superb reduction of recilla tequila and guajillo chiles. The slightly smoky tequila adds fantastic depth to the reduction. Ask for slices of their fresh bread; you will to get every drop of this addictive sauce!

Kudos to Chef Montes. You must experience the “magic” he creates in a kitchen the size of a closet.

My friends & dinner companions, Treavor, Carol, Robb, Mandy, & Scott, and I agree… No Way José exceeded all of our expectations.

Casually elegant, simply perfect, absolutely scrumptious - No Way José! could easily become my favorite moderately priced eatery in Puerto Vallarta. José, please save me a table; I’ll be back in January!

PIANETA GELATO – Puerto Vallarta

Pianeta Gelato can be found in the heart of Zona Romatica across the street from another of my local faves – Joe Jack’s Fish Shack. This area of Vallarta is the older, charming Puerto Vallarta. Zona Romantica is Vallarta's most energized neighborhood with the south side beach, restaurants, bars, lounges and beach side cafes.

Pianeta Gelato is a new casual eatery with 2 different concepts – wood oven fired pizzas and homemade gelato. The short menu offers pizzas, salads, paninis, lasagna, beer and wine. On this visit, Carol, Treavor, Mandy & I went for a pizza dinner.

The pizzeria’s dining area and the pizza oven are outside in a very comfortable garden space with large plants, an overhang providing protection from Vallarta’s golden sun, a rock & water element hiding some of the noise from the street and a collection of sofas near the sidewalk. The sofas are perfect for relaxing and sipping beverages with friends and people watching!

Eloy, the sexiest pizza designer I’ve met, creates one of the best pizzas I’ve found in Puerto Vallarta. For dinner, we devoured 3 of Eloy’s creations. We had 2 Pizza Margheritas – a crust stretched so thin we could almost see through it topped with homemade tomato sauce, freshly shredded mozzarella cheese and thin strips of basil. The third pizza was the Pizza di Prosciutto – again the same incredibly thin crust, tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese and very thin slices of parma ham providing the “frosting” on this pie. Delizioso!

The pizza pies are fired in a specially designed brick oven within the outdoor pizza prep area located at the far end of the garden. Pizzas are fired for 4-6 minutes depending on the toppings. Each of our pizzas arrived piping hot with charred, cracked edges! The internal oven temperature is approximately 500º Fahrenheit (260º Celsius) with a cooking surface of 380º F (193º C). The oven is never turned off; the wood just burns down. It would take too long each day to fire it up to the required cooking temp.

A shaker containing a dry spice blend of ground red pepper, garlic & onion is found on each table. We all recommend that a couple shakes be added to each slice providing some missing zest to the tomato sauce. Once added, it is difficult to find a better pizza pie in PV.

My friends & I made several stops inside the new gelato space. I did not order gelato but my friends raved about the intense, fresh flavor combinations. However, I did observe a service counter operation that lacked sufficient staff and training to efficiently serve their customers. The “place your gelato order here” & the “pay here” areas are confusing and jam too many customers into a small space. One scooper should not service customers coming from 2 different directions, but there were always 2-3 staffing the cash register. I found it disorganized. If this is resolved, it should be a success.

From the number of occupied garden tables I’ve observed as I pass by this new café, Pianeta Gelato is becoming a popular pizza eatery in Old Town. I know I’ll be returning during this visit, at least for pizza… & I did.

I have noticed 'new' restaurant activity behind the papered windows. I am anxious for the paper to come down & the doors to open!

THE LOOP BAR & RESTAURANT - Minneapolis

The Loop Bar & Restaurant is in the revitalized warehouse district – an area of trendy lofts, interesting restaurants and entertainment. Three college buddies opened the Loop. As you enter this casual comfortable space with 20+ foot ceilings with wooden beams, you get a sense that you have been here before.

Having heard that The Loop now has a Sunday brunch, I headed over to the North Loop area to give it a try.

I enjoyed several steaming mugs of coffee – dark & smoky. The bright coffee may have had a bit of chicory.

The brunch buffet has a nice variety breakfast items to start your Sunday. I decided to used small plates and graze my way from one end to the other.

I began with chunks of juicy and sweet cantaloupe, honey dew and pineapple. This fresh starter brought a bit of sunshine to a somewhat gloomy morning beyond the huge windows across the front of this interesting space.

My next plate was a mound of crispy hash browns, links of pork sausage and an egg sandwich. The over-easy egg topped with cheddar cheese and several slices of crisp, lean bacon sat on a ½ English muffin.

Surprisingly, I had room for more! I then enjoyed a small slice of breakfast pizza – scrambled egg, spinach and sprinkles of shredded cheddar cheese served on a very thin pizza pastry. I felt the need to try the Caesar salad of chopped romaine, homemade garlicy croutons, shreds of parmesan, bits of sour cornichons (crisp, tart gherkin pickles) and a creamy dressing exploding with flavor. Excellent combination!

Nearing the end of the buffet, I did not want to pass on the cooked-to-order omelet or waffle. I needed to make a choice and went with the waffle. The thick waffle was perfect with crispy edges and a fully cooked center. The warm maple syrup was “icing on the cake”. Delicious.

I sat along the interior wall in one of the booths. I recommend selecting a high table along the exterior wall. It appeared that the housekeeping staff was on vacation; the ledges above the booths screamed for a good cleaning. At 11am, my preference would be music you can converse over and welcome the day. The rock that was playing was too early, too loud & too difficult to talk over. It shortened my visit.

I will return hoping to find the same great space, same friendly service… but different music.

CHEEKY MONKEY DELI - St Paul

Cheeky Monkey Deli opened in February ’09 in a wide, open space of bright, white tiles, red & glossy white walls, a huge fireplace, chalkboard menus and an eclectic collection of “frame within a frame” artwork of Andy Warhol prints, comic book covers, record album covers and vintage black & white images. It works! There are no deep fryers hiding in the back making it very easy to enjoy the amazing aromas drifting from the kitchen. The steady stream of diners placing orders at the front counter indicates that the secret is out!

I have had several great experiences on prior visits; I decided to treat my parents to a dinner at one of the best casual eateries I have found in the Twin Cities.

We didn’t break my tradition and had the meat board as the starter. The fine selection of mortadella, pate, Genoa salami and prosciutto arrived with olive oil, balsamic vinegar reduction, sun dried tomatoes and an incredible combination of chopped olives & peppers (similar to tapenade with less EVOO). We used the small thin slices of French bread to make tiny open face sandwiches that quickly disappeared.

For dinner, I chose the meat loaf – the 2 thick slices were a delicious combination of beef, veal, & bits of onion resting in the pan sauce accented with butter and parsley. The side of spicy mayo included sambal creating a flavor explosion. Sambal is a very popular condiment from Southeast Asia of "mortar & pestoled" chili peppers & salt as its base. Yumm. I also had the griddle potatoes – thick, golden brown slices of Idaho potatoes generously dusted with paprika, black pepper, coarse salt & parsley.

As we finished our dinner, my father said there are few restaurants that he has gone to that he would want to talk about but this is one of them. My parents and I agree – this casual restaurant with an inviting atmosphere, super friendly staff and incredible food is fantastic!

Cheeky Monkey takes simple ingredients and makes them exceptional!

CHEEKY MONKEY DELI – St Paul

Cheeky Monkey Deli opened in February ’09 in a wide, open space of bright, white tiles, red & glossy white walls, a huge fireplace, chalkboard menus and an eclectic collection of “frame within a frame” artwork of Andy Warhol prints, comic book covers, record album covers and vintage black & white images. It works!

My friend, Bev, splits her time between Minneapolis and San Diego. Prior to each of her trips back to Minneapolis, I am tasked to find a new eatery that neither of us has visited. Tonight, it was Cheeky Monkey.

We began the evening sipping goblets of the Banrock Merlot (organic) from New Zealand. They offer a varied and interesting list of reasonably priced beer and wine.

For our starter, we had the daily Meat Board – an excellent collection of prosciutto, rare roast beef, smoked ham, Genoa salami and black olives, pickled cucumbers, sun-dried tomatoes and grainy mustard for taking it up a notch. A basket of flatbread and French bread made for easier nibbling. Great idea for a starter!

For dinner, I chose the Cumin Pork Shoulder Hot Pot – a savory, very tender serving of pork slow cooked in it own juices (strained before serving) accented with cumin and Mirepoix. Mirepoix is a simple and flavorful combination of carrots, celery and onion used in nearly every traditional French stew. The Pork Hot Pot was topped with flat leaf parsley and caramelized onions. Yumm. As my side, I selected the braised seasonal greens. Today, it was chopped kale braised in a fantastic vegetable broth with a bit of olive oil, lemon juice and tiny bits of fresh garlic. Delicious!

Bev and I decided to share a large slice of Coconut Crème pie made by the chefs in Cheeky Monkey’s kitchen. The buttery crust with a touch of brown sugar supported a thick layer of vanilla custard and a mound of whipped cream topped with a generous sprinkling of toasted coconut. Heavenly. . .

I noticed on one of the artistically written chalkboards they offer a Sunday brunch featuring food stuffs from the St Paul Farmer’s Market. My next visit will be for brunch.

Joshua, our extremely friendly server, suggested his favorites on the menu. He was spot-on every time with his suggestions. Co-owner and chef, Matt McArthur, excels in creating extraordinary, casual food. This is the best comfort food I can remember eating. Sorry Mom, Cheeky Monkey rocks!

ZELO – Minneapolis

Zelo is one of the better eating establishments in the downtown area. It has been serving exceptional Italian cuisine for 10 years. Today’s experience was no different from previous visits… excellent!

Zelo’s very large contemporary space of chocolate brown walls with accents of gold, silver and exquisitely colored glass is casually elegant and very relaxing. Ask for a table near the window or a large, round corner banquette if there are at least 6 in your party. They offer perfect dining room & sidewalk site lines. The stunning ceiling in the smaller, center dining room is worth a visit!

For lunch, I ordered an off-menu special – the walleye sandwich. The large walleye fillet was lightly breaded and quickly fried. The almost oil-free fillet was very fresh and flaky. Not being a fan of ciabatta buns, I substituted a toasted bun with a generous smear of garlic mayo. I also had a side of their very thin, crispy fries. A dash of salt and I was in heaven.

As always, the entire staff was spot on during my visit – friendly, accommodating and paced. I’ve never been less than satisfied when dining at Zelo.

FIVE GUYS BURGERS & FRIES – Minneapolis (Edina)

Five Guys Burgers & Fries is the newest burger joint to arrive in the Twin Cities. The long narrow space explodes with high gloss red, black & white accents. The high ceilings make the space seem larger than it is. Sacks of potatoes divide the walkway to the cashier from the eating area.

I ordered the hamburger (2 patties - fresh, never frozen). I chose 4 of the 15 available toppings: grilled onions, mustard, jalapenos, and tomato. This incredible mouth full was served on a toasted bun. Next time, I will request my grilled onions to be completely grilled. Mine were far from being grilled, closer to raw & oily.

I also had a side of Cajun seasoned fries. These potato sticks were perfectly cooked in peanut oil. Believe me, the oil makes a huge difference. Based on Jonathan’s (my cashier) description of the Cajun seasoned fries, I expected much more zip than what I got. Next time, I’ll order the regular fries.

The friendly staff is eager to answer questions and keeps this diner spotless!

PICNIC Restaurant & Bar - Puerto Vallarta

Luis told me the sad news during this visit to Puerto Vallarta. He would be closing Picnic. Over the past 2 ½ years, my friends and I enjoyed countless hours eating and drinking at his eatery. I am saddened to see it be another to close due to the difficult economic conditions in my spot of paradise. Picnic & Luis, you will be missed!

BOCA BENTO - Mismaloya/Puerto Vallarta

Boca Bento is located in Mismaloya – a quick 15 minute taxi ride south of Puerto Vallarta. Boca Bento’s comfortable dining room is a large covered dining area (without walls) surrounded by tropical garden spaces.

Jose & I wanted a “change of scenery” so we headed south for lunch. We ended up at one of my favorites, Boca Bento.

For the starter, we had the Queso Findido – an incredible blend of 3 cheeses (Chihuahua, Manchego, & Oaxaca). We requested crumbled chorizo be added. This combination was baked to a gooey goodness and served with warm flour tortillas. A trio of sauces – pico de gallo, sour cream, and guerea (roasted tomatoes, peppers, garlic & onion) accompanied the starter. These sauces were first spread on the tortilla followed by a couple of spoons of the cheese mixture. Amazing!

For lunch, I had the fish tacos. The grilled white fish was marinated in orange juice, garlic, tomato, achiote & apple cider vinegar. The flaky fish was piled in a tortilla topped with shredded lettuce and a generous drizzle of a jabanero mayo sauce. Fantastic.


Kudos to Stewart & Monica (the owners) for keeping Chef Juan Zuno in charge of the menu. His creations continue to excite me.

BITE ME! BEACH CLUB - Puerto Vallarta

Bite Me! Beach Club’s indoor/outdoor café is located on the beach about 4 blocks south of the wooden pier in the Zona Romantica area – the older charming Puerto Vallarta. The casual, relaxing space of flowing drapes, dark woods, comfortable tables & chairs on an elevated outdoor dining area and yards & yards of glass if you choose to dine inside – and nothing to obstruct your views of the beach & the bay.

This casual beach club eatery recently came under new management. I believe Grant is the new manager. His unending energy has successfully re-energized the beach club.

Jaime and I spent the afternoon enjoying tall, perfectly tart vodka lemonades and all of the beach eye candy!

We started with a “flower” of angular chips and a mound of fantastic guacamole and a side of pico de gallo that had just a bit of heat. The beautiful presentation was accented with bits of red & yellow peppers. Salvador made certain we did not run out of warm chips!

For lunch, I had the “Mein Herr” sandwich – a stack of Black Forest Ham, Swiss cheese, tomato and mayo on a toasted pumpernickel sub-like roll (baked fresh daily). A side of hot and crispy fries came as a side. A salad of baby greens and carrot slivers were tossed in a balsamic vinegar and wine reduction dressing. This crisp salad was creatively served in a radicchio cup. Delicious! This reincarnation is a huge improvement over its past life.

Grant’s smile, personality and ‘biting’ humor kept the tables filled with guests. He has retained the same sexy & very friendly staff. Julio, Frederico and Salvador are quick to accommodate!

I will most certainly be returning to Bite Me! on my next visit in November.
