THE VIEW - Minneapolis

The View is located across the street from Lake Calhoun. For those of you connected to the web, The View offers online reservations.

Seldom do I stray from my favorite on the menu. By now, you know it is the flank steak and grilled vegetables. I listened to Stephen & went for the seafood. He has never steered me wrong - tonight was no exception.

We started with the baby Portobello mushroom caps stuffed with Gorgonzola cheese. Excellent. We were tempted to order another serving. For dinner this evening, I had the Parmesan crusted sea bass with roasted butternut squash with a hint of nutmeg. The sea bass was drizzled with a very light Gorgonzola cream sauce. Outstanding – the sea bass was cooked to a flakey perfection!

For dessert, my dinner companion, Joel, and I split the Signature cheesecake. On this visit, we had 2 sides each of the homemade caramel and strawberry sauces. This dessert was as good as it was on my prior 12+ visits. This is a perfect solution to satisfy your after-dinner craving for something sweet.

Mmm, Mmm, Mmm…

BOCA BENTO - Puerto Vallarta

Boca Bento is located in the Zona Romantica area of Vallarta - the older, charming Puerto Vallarta. Zona Romantica (aka Los Muertos) is Vallarta's most active area with the Southside’s beach, restaurants, bars, lounges and beachside cafes. The neighborhood has recently been revitalized and the main street, Olas Altas, is now lined with fun to fine dining, sidewalk cafes, great bars and nightclubs.

The fusion of Latin and Asian flavors on the menu was a delight to read. I began my dining experience with the Thai style chili crusted calamari. The “translucent” breading did not hide the freshest calamari I’ve ever eaten. The chipotle dipping sauce was a welcomed change from the usual garlic aioli served by many restaurants.

I’ve dined at Boca Bento on many occasions. This evening I selected a seat at the bar. I was pleasantly surprised when Juan (the chef) stopped by to greet me. It was his night off; however, when I made the comment that I was looking for a “surf ‘n turf” combination of some sort, he headed to the kitchen. He personally created an off-the-menu entrée for me. While he was in the kitchen, I was entertained by Alberto (the lounge’s mixologist) and Shawnee, my very friendly waiter.

My dinner was served! I received a combination of huge Adobe flavored shrimp with grilled pineapple & a side of chimichurri sauce and the juiciest, most tender grilled beef medallions I have ever eaten. The medallions were served with a pasilla chile sauce. The sauce delivered just the right amount of “heat.” The pasilla chile has a mild to medium heat; this chile is a good substitute for Ancho and Mulato chiles. I had 2 choices of vegetables – a very light potato puree seasoned with a hint of wasabi and grilled vegetables dusted with salt, pepper, & tiny flakes of roasted garlic. Fantastic!

Just when I thought it could not get any better than this, the chef told me my dessert would soon be ready. He made me a passion fruit soufflé with a passion fruit sorbet. This incredible dessert was served in a spun sugar cup. Simple perfection. The meal was 2 hours of bliss.

Boca Bento is comfortably decorated & filled with beautiful people wearing beautiful clothes. I’ve made several visits to this restaurant and have never been disappointed. The menu, the chef, the ambiance, the service… all rank near the top of my favorites list in Puerto Vallarta.

Mmm, Mmm, Mmm…

RIVER CAFE - Puerto Vallarta

While in Puerto Vallarta, I dined at one of the city’s best restaurants – The River Café. This incredible restaurant is ideal for special occasions or when you want to stimulate your taste buds. This evening my dinner companion was my friend, Leo. We choose this picturesque location to celebrate his birthday.

The River Café is located below the bridge along the shores of the Rio Cuale – a mere 500 yards from Bay of Banderas. The bay is between Vallarta and the Pacific Ocean. The river is from the waters off the Sierra Madre Mountains and enters the Bay of Banderas. We were fortunate to dine at 1 of 3 tables in the gazebo (connected to the main dining area by a suspended walk). This amazing table is at the river’s edge.

The restaurant was participating in the 12th Annual Festival Gourmet International. During this festival culinary “magicians” come from around the world, creating special menus at 20+ restaurants in Vallarta. We choose our dinner from the special festival menu, making certain to select courses we had not eaten.

For starters, we chose the Oxtail Ravioli resting in a semi-sweet balsamic vinegar sauce with caramelized leeks and a sprinkling of pepper flakes. The light pasta pillows of oxtail melted in our mouths. Indescribable! We also had the quick Fried Camembert cheese with grilled green apples. The warm cheese and apples were the perfect duet. Both starters made us wonder how it could get any better.

Our main entrees were the Rabbit 2 Ways and Golden Fin Tuna. One piece of rabbit was slowly braised and served with a delicate sauce of wild mushrooms; the second piece was slowly roasted with thin slivers of root vegetables. The rabbit was served with roasted baby carrots, zucchini and leeks all resting on a fluffy bed of mashed potatoes. These airy potatoes had a subtle hint of wasabi. The tuna fillet was perfectly grilled and seasoned with citrus zest. The tuna was accompanied with crisp green beans and the airy mashed potatoes.

For dessert, we had the Grilled Pineapple with homemade coconut ice cream and macadamia nuts. The succulent pieces of warm, fresh pineapple and ice cream created an amazing tropical flavor explosion.

If you happen to choose the River Café for either breakfast or lunch, you may find 2 iguanas in the trees surrounding the restaurant. These iguanas have been “local residents” for years.

The gently flowing river adds to the amazing ambiance and service you will find in this tropical paradise. It is a perfect way to spend a wonderfully relaxing evening enjoying some of the finest cuisine you will find in my favorite Mexican city – Puerto Vallarta!

PICNIC Restaurant & Bar - Puerto Vallarta

Picnic is owned by the very charming Luis. His indoor/outdoor restaurant is located in Zona Romantica area of Vallarta - the older, charming Puerto Vallarta. Zona Romantica is also referred to as Los Muertos. This downtown area is Vallarta's most active with the southside's beach, restaurants, bars, lounges and beachside cafes. The entire neighborhood has recently been revitalized and the main street, Olas Altas, is now lined with funky-to-fine dining, sidewalk cafes, and great bars and nightclubs.

I found Picnic on my 2nd day in Vallarta. I had lunch at this quaint restaurant 8 out of my 12 days in Puerto Vallarta. Picnic has a nice, short menu. The decision was easy. I had heard from several locals that I should order the roasted chicken meal.

I ordered the chicken on each visit. The delicately roasted chicken falls apart with the touch of a fork. The moist, flavorful chicken is served with 2 sides – perfectly roasted potatoes and the most amazing rice. The rice is lightly flavored with tomatoes, carrots and peas. I often ordered a double side of rice – hold the potatoes. The potatoes are very good, but the rice is fantastic!

Trust me, you will not have room for dessert.

On one of my many visits to this colorful restaurant, I learned that many will telephone ahead guaranteeing a chicken will be waiting for them. Get there early. I learned that this gem often runs out of its signature dish around 4:30p. It is hard to believe the meal (excluding beverage) costs only $7 USD.

Upon your arrival, request a table on the balcony. Picnic is open from 11am – 6pm (closed Sunday) and accepts only cash. Picnic is half way up the stairway on the corner of Olas Altas & Pulpito.

Mmm, Mmm...

THE VIEW - Minneapolis

The View was last night's place to be in the Cities. The ballroom in the same building as the View was the site of the "BooBall". The restaurant and lounge were overflowing with gorgeous diners in fabulous costumes. The View is located across the street from Lake Calhoun. Plan ahead and request Stephen’s section. For those connected to the web, the View offers online reservations.

Once again, I had the Tomato Basil soup as my starter to the meal. The soup is a comforting blend of roasted roma tomatoes and basil in a base of chicken stock. On this visit, I requested additional basil in my soup. Fantastic!

This evening I strayed from the always perfect broiled flank steak and had the grilled Tilapia. The generous piece of fish was gently grilled and simply seasoned with a sprinkling of salt and pepper. The fish was topped with sliced, sweet & juicy black, green and red grapes. Asparagus was the fresh vegetable of the day. The entrée was simply delicious.

The rich slice of Signature Cheesecake accompanied by a trio of sauces – caramel (my favorite), chocolate and fresh berry. Another perfect dessert to share. The caramel sauce is spectacular; I used a spoon to get every drop from its serving cup.

The View is one of my favorite restaurants. I eat there more often than my blog indicates. I will continue to add my experiences as I work my way through the menu. This could take awhile; I often order my favorite – the flank steak. Farzaad & Lorenzo ensure all guests receive “service with a smile!”

ROSSI'S STEAKHOUSE - Minneapolis

Rossi's Steakhouse is located in the lower level of a new multi-purpose building in downtown Minneapolis. Upon entering Rossi's, you feel like you have entered a private club - well appointed and quiet.

For lunch, I had the Martini Burger. It is a very large burger of high quality beef with vermouth sautéed green olives wrapped in a blanket of Swiss cheese on a pumpernickel rye bun. The burger was perfectly cooked, slightly charred on the edges. The green olives provided an interesting contrast to the thick slice of Swiss. The overly buttered bun was too small for the burger and toppings, making this finger food somewhat cumbersome to eat. The golden brown french fries served on the side were piping hot. Lukewarm fries can easily ruin a meal; this won't happen at Rossi's! The small side of cole slaw had a nice chunky texture, but was too sweet for my taste buds.

Rossi's Steak Seasoning (dry) found on each table adds a fantastic zing to both the fries and burger! Serving tiny bottles of soda (approx 6 oz) is a bit pretentious for me. Order the ice water with lemon - free refills.

The service was adequate and friendly. The dining room was 60% occupied at 12:30; once the order for our table of six was placed, it took 26 minutes for the food to arrive. The food was hot - the wait was not.

Mmm...

CHIANG MAI THAI - Minneapolis

Chaing Mai Thai is located in the Uptown area of Minneapolis. I had heard positive comments about the restaurant. This was my first visit; I was surprised to find it at approximately 50% capacity.

For a starter, I had the Wontons filled with cream cheese and jalapeños. The wontons were very tasty but greasier than I would expect. My main course was better. I ordered the “Khao Cadeukadeek”. This was a very tasty combination of charbroiled beef medallions with tomatoes and fried rice. It was served with sides of spicy Sriracha sauce and sweet hoison sauce. The beef was very tender, receiving kudos from both my tablemates and myself.

Sriracha is a moderately hot, bright orange sauce made from sun ripened chilies. The chilies and garlic are ground into a paste. This sauce will easily put extra zing in your burgers, soups, or sauces. Look for it at your favorite market. It is fantastic!

If you choose Chaing Mai Thai, plan on waiting for your food. I recommend ordering a starter. After placing the dinner order, it took 25 minutes for the food to arrive. The service was slow and confusingly unattentive. Go for the food, not the service.

Mmm...

LUND'S DELI - Minneapolis (various metro locations)

Lund's Markets have amazing deli's featuring some of the finest selections for "meals to go." There are days when looking at a menu is not the answer. The Deli is the perfect solution for those times when you want to spend an evening at home with your favorite book or …

For my relaxing evening at home, I stopped at their Uptown location where I found something for most appetites. If you want to sample one of the many selections, just ask. With Kevin’s help, I selected the Tuscan Steak, seasoned with a dry rub & perfectly grilled leaving a pink center. It was so tender; I cut it with my fork. The selected side was the Roasted Chick Pea Salad. I never knew you could roast chickpeas. They had a nutty texture that went well with the steak. The salad seasoned with herbs and a drizzle of olive oil was deliciously different!

As you leave the deli, you will walk by their olive bar featuring no less than 8 different olive selections. Pack a container of your favorites for the ride home.

The Chocolate Dome for dessert was a light puff of chocolate cake. The hidden layer of chocolate mousse was a wonderful surprise. This delicate dome was covered in a thin blanket of dark chocolate frosting. The base of the dome had a ring of chocolate covered “crispies.”

CONGA LATIN BISTRO - Minneapolis

Conga Latin Bistro is located in an up and coming trendy area of the city. This area with its very expensive lofts is just across the Mississippi River from downtown. The atmosphere is very comfortable - nothing pretentious - with very friendly bi-lingual service. The music and dinner guests floating across the dance floor is HOT - muy caliente!

For a starter, try the Empanada Platter with 2 each of beef, chicken & cheese. These puffed pastries were exploding with flavor. The dipping sauce was a bonus! The Chicken Isabel is marinated in orange juice, grilled and served with sweet chunks of papaya. It was accompanied by a generous serving of mashed potatoes. The potatoes were predictably good; I would have preferred the congri. Congri is a fantastic side of white rice and black beans. The Tres Leche Cake resting in a wonderful sauce was delightfully sweet, but could have used a bit more time absorbing the sweet milk. It was enjoyable with a strong cup of coffee.

Looking to satisfy your craving for Cuban cuisine? Conga is a wonderful option. If you are dining on either Friday or Saturday evening, request a table near the dance floor and feel the Latin heat! Things begin to warm up around 9:30. After dinner and dancing, take a short walk back to the river and stroll along the shore of the "Mighty Miss". The City skyline and bridges are beautifully lit each evening.

THE VIEW - Minneapolis

The View is visually entertaining – the décor, guests, wait staff and owner are a perfect combination of eye-candy! Need more? The View is located across the street from Lake Calhoun. Plan ahead and request Stephen’s section. For those connected to the web, the View offers online reservations.

The Tomato Basil soup was an excellent starter to the meal. The soup is a comforting blend of roasted roma tomatoes and basil in a base of chicken stock. The soup would dance with an extra pinch of basil.

The Broiled Flank Steak with steamed vegetables is consistently perfect on each visit. I am delighted the Flank Steak has a permanent place on the menu.

For dessert, I strongly recommend the Chocolate Dreams. It is a sensuous blend of a rich, dark chocolate brownie and vanilla-bean ice cream. This decadent dessert is definitely meant to be shared. A cappuccino tops off this wonderful meal!

GILBERT'S MEDITERRANEAN CAFE - Atlanta

Gilbert's is located in the midtown area of Atlanta. This diverse midtown neighborhood is filled with eclectic shopping, dining, entertainment, and arts.

The evening's special was Lobster Ravioli, Filet of Beef and Grilled Beans. The light ravioli pillows were filled with succulent pieces of lobster. The 6 raviolis had a very light cream sauce accented with lemon. The extremely tender & flavorful filet was fantastic - cooked to perfection. The crisp beans were quickly grilled and slightly sprinkled with coarse salt.

Gilbert and his brother own this very comfortable, welcoming restaurant. The guests were eclectic and entertaining. The cozy, raised bar is at the front of the restaurant near the windows - perfect for people watching. I was very surprised at the reasonable prices, expecting to pay much more than the amount on my check. I am certain you will enjoy the fine southern hospitality and exceptional cuisine! Be certain to make a selection from their martini menu.

The very helpful salesman at Pergola (check it out this fantastic gift shop) highly recommended this restaurant. He told me Gilbert's evening special was not to be missed. I agree...

MOJITO RESTAURANT & LOUNGE - Atlanta (midtown area)

Mojito is located off the lobby in the Wyndham Hotel in the midtown area of Atlanta.

The Passion Mojito is pure tropical heaven. The blend of rum, passion fruit juice, simple syrup and mint is perfect. I easily enjoyed 2 of these refreshing libations!

For dinner, I had the “Pollo Asado en Naraja Agria”, also known as baked chicken breast marinated in the juice of sour orange and garlic. The chicken was served over a very flavorful blend of black beans and rice. The extremely tender chicken breast easily gave way to my fork. Delicioso!

The waiter highly recommended the flan. I wish I had room for one of my favorite desserts. Next time…

The attentive wait staff added to the enjoyment of my meal. The food is far more exciting than the ambiance.
