CITIZEN CAFÉ – Minneapolis
The comfortable L-shaped dining room seats approximately 45 guests at wooden tables dressed with heavy brown paper tablecloths. The vibrant posters on the walls add a splash of color. The food is the focus; everything on the menu is made from scratch in their kitchen. The high quality ingredients were apparent in everything we ordered.
Bev and I decided to share a starter as we sipped our goblets of malbec. We had the Country Pate – a large, firm slice of course ground pork and chicken resting in a brown grainy mustard with a hint of horseradish plus a sprinkling of capers. Thin silver-dollar slices of French & rye bread and spreads of soft butter and spicy chickpea were a perfect match for the pate. Delicious!
Both of us chose the Grilled Marlin for dinner. The large fillet was a perfectly grilled – seared, juicy & slightly rare. The marlin was plated with a mound of fluffy mashed potatoes and minced poblano peppers. The generous side of roasted cauliflower, golden beets, carrots & parsnips was excellent. Guacamole and a tomato salsa came with the marlin, if we wanted to take it up a notch. Both were tasty; however, the marlin by itself was perfect!
I have a weakness for crème brulee. We decided to try their version of this classic dessert. This very smooth and creamy delight was topped with fresh, sweet blueberries and strawberries. The burnt sugar was still warm when it arrived at our table.
Megan, our server, was extremely friendly. She knew the menu and her suggestions were spot on.
I will certainly return to Citizen Café for another relaxing dining experience where the staff and the food shine!

ELSIE'S RESTAURANT - Minneapolis
Elsie’s is an “entertainment complex” with 16 bowling lanes, a karaoke corner and a restaurant. A family run operation serving casual breakfast, lunch & dinner fare for 56 years.
“When in Rome. . .” We started with a basket of crispy tater tots and a ketchup dipping sauce bumped up a notch with hot sauce. How could this not be good?
For dinner, I chose the buffalo chicken breast sandwich. The large whole breast was grilled and bathed in a wonderful zesty buffalo sauce. The homemade bun was buttered and toasted before surrounding the delicious chicken. A side of kettle chips and crisp pickle spears round out this tasty meal.
Our very friendly and sexy server, Joel, told us this very popular venue is “buzzing” in to the early morning. For the 1 ½ hours we were at our table eating & drinking, there were diners waiting to snag a table as quick as one opened. We walked through the bowling area as we left – all 16 lanes were busy and a line of karaoke performers waiting for their 4 minutes of fame.
Good times, good food… easy on the wallet!

BALI - Minneapolis
Bali was alive by 5:30p. All tables in the front dining area and most seats at the bar were occupied with an urban mix of guests.
My libation of choice was once again the Balitini - a fantastic blend of vodka and a splash of Thai chili pepper infused pineapple juice. The hint of an ‘after burn’ is a nice surprise. Again, I had 2!
It was too early for me to eat dinner. Wanting to nibble on something as I enjoyed my Balitinis, I went with the Siomai (I actually had 2 plates). These half moon pipin' hot potstickers are plump with minced chicken, onion, carrot, garlic & a dash of light soy sauce. A fantastic mayo based dipping sauce with sweet chilis adds a nice contrast to these delicious crispy nibbles!
Its unfortunate the kitchen exhaust system can not yet handle the smells from the large number of plates leaving the kitchen.
Again, the staff could not have been more pleasant. From the looks of those in the dining room, I wasn't the only one enjoying myself!

PANCHO VILLA - Minneapolis
My friend, Tim, and I each had a challenging week at work and we were looking for an inexpensive escape. We have been to Pancho Villa on several occasions; the weekends are always much livelier. Perfect solution for putting a wacky week behind us.
We decided to share the starter. We chose shrimp; a dozen grilled, peel ‘n eat arrived with a trio of salsas – pico de gallo (a fresh condiment of tomato, onion, cilantro, lime juice, and jalapeños), guacamole and chipotle. Excellent!
This evening I had the chimichanga. I realize this dish originated in the Southwest US, but it has all the ingredients of a great burrito. The gigantic crispy fried burrito was stuffed with pastor (vertically roasted pork & pineapple), red rice, beans, minced onion, and cilantro. Melted cheese and red sauce garnished the chimichanga. It arrived with mounds of homemade guacamole & pico de gallo resting on shredded lettuce.
The service was friendly and fairly quick. Food is generally incredible – large portions, homemade & cooked to order. As I mentioned earlier, I have eaten here on numerous occasions and find the food and service to be better Monday – Thursday. This very popular restaurant becomes too busy for the kitchen to keep pace with the orders and maintain the quality of food delivered earlier in the week.
Sit with your back to the very large windows - you will feel like you are in "Anywhere", Mexico. This very casual eatery is energetic & authentic. I have never found an empty table on any of my visits. The predominantly Latino crowd will be celebrating birthdays, watching their favorite novella or sports team on the large flat screens or singing karaoke. Alexis is the weekend karaoke diva - full of fun & glam! She has both rooms moving. Good times & good food for all.

BALI - Minneapolis
My friend, Bev, who spends a great deal of time in Bali, agreed to join me at Bali for dinner. After all, is it possible to compare a restaurant to a live-in cook at your villa in Bali? Yes. She loved it and so did I.
Bev’s libation for the evening was malbec and mine was the “Balitini” – a fantastic blend of vodka and a splash of Thai chili pepper infused pineapple juice. The hint of an ‘after burn’ was a bit unusual and very interesting. I had 2!
We decided to share plates. For starters, we had the Gurita Goreng – a threesome of lightly breaded, fried baby octopus resting in a citrusy herb and garlic sauce. The sauce resembled a thin pesto. Delicious!
For dinner, we had the Daging Rendang. Rendang is dry rubbed chunks of lean beef simmered in a rich, intensely seasoned brown coconut gravy. Some of the spices that popped out included turmeric, ginger, shallots & lemon grass. The melt-in-your-mouth tender pieces of beef were tossed with thinly sliced potatoes & carrot slivers. Incredible! A cone shaped serving of jasmine rice infused with coconut milk wrapped in a banana leaf comes with the dish. So tasty, I could eat it alone. Our vegetable was the Tumis Kecang Panjang – long thin crispy green beans (chopped into bite size pieces) and nuggets of tofu stir-fried & tossed in a nutty, garlic soy-based sauce slightly sweetened with palm sugar.
Bev insisted we have the Black Rice for dessert. The exotic, but simple dessert is lightly sweetened with coconut milk. The rice had a slightly chewy texture. A perfect ending to an outstanding meal.
Our server was very attentive and was able to answer all of Bev’s questions. I was there to enjoy a meal with my friend.
I recommend changing the music. Play more international selections, less "American pop" and certainly no need for the thumping "house music" after 10p. This is not a club; those wanting house music should head downtown.
Also, the one negative is the exhaust system in the kitchen. It is weak; be prepared to leave smelling somewhat like your dinner and those meals served next to you. Be warned... leave your best clothes home.
I hope the number of filled tables is an indication of a new energy that will be on Nicollet Avenue for many years.

BOCA BENTO - Mismaloya/Puerto Vallarta
"Mismaloya is the small bay side village where in 1963 Hollywood director, John Huston, chose to make the movie "Night of the Iguana" which changed the face of Puerto Vallarta forever. The publicity created by Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton's love affair and interest in the Mexican town where it occurred, put Puerto Vallarta on the world's map.
Since then, this tropical paradise, where the verdant jungle vegetation of the Sierra Madre mountains meets the crystal clear waters of Bandera Bay, has been passionately linked to Puerto Vallarta's history."
[About Mismaloyla]
Stewart and Monica have the Casa Iguana resort and moved Boca Bento into a large covered dining area (without walls). The very comfortable, tropical garden space made me wonder why it took me so long to visit their new location. Yes, Juan is still in charge of the kitchen.
I invited 5 friends to join me for dinner. We all had a fantastic time.
Unfortunately, I can not find my notes on my meal; I believe I left it at the table. We shared so many different dishes, I can not remember exactly what we had. I do recall that we ate shrimp prepared a couple of different ways, mahi mahi, tangy pad thai, octopus and. . . Scrumptious!
I do remember we started with pomegranate martinis. Refreshingly delicious - we enjoyed several rounds.
Stewart, the gracious owner, stopped by our table several times throughout our meal ensuring all of us were enjoying ourselves. We certainly did.
I plans to return to Puerto Vallarta in May have been pushed to mid-July. I have already made my reservation for dinner! More details after this visit.

TRATTORIA MICHEL - Puerto Vallarta
Michel has created a very comfortable, casually elegant, space in shades of white with splashes of color coming from the fresh flowers and candles on the tables.
Our condo is just up the hill from Michel's. The first time we walked by the restaurant, it was David who said we needed to make a reservation. I quickly agreed. Michel's is one of my favorites in Vallarta. David & I sat at a table on the wrap-around patio enjoying a tropical evening in paradise.
At Trattoria Michel, my preferred libation is their Grey Goose martini, slightly dirty.
I selected the Insalata di Finocchio con arrancia, pamplemouse, limone y Pecorin Sardo. This very fresh shaved fennel salad was an explosion of flavors - juicy segments of grapefruit, orange and lime - served over wild baby greens topped with Pecorino cheese and a drizzle of grape oil. Excellent!
My entree on this visit was the Milanesa de Pollon con e capperi. This whole, flattened sauteed chicken breast was served with a translucent white wine and lemon sauce, accented with giant caper berries. This succulent chicken had a trio of sides - slivers of steamed sweet-as-sugar carrots, grape tomatoes sauteed in a bit of olive oil, garlic & herbs, and a small mound of steamed baby spinach.
At this point, we asked Michel to join us while he ate his dinner. For dessert, he recommended the Zabaglione with amaretto. The egg whites, sugar and amaretto combine to create a heavenly puff of decadence. It has been a long time since I enjoyed a dessert like I did this evening. Indescribably delicious!
Once again, Michel ensured we had the perfect dining experience... paradise within a paradise. I am quite anxious to return to my favorite table at my favorite restaurant. My trip was originally planned for mid-May, but will now be mid-July.

JOE JACK'S FISH SHACK - Puerto Vallarta
It has become a tradition of mine to have their special libation - a Mermaid Martini (or 2) - as I eat my way through the menu. Tonight was no different!
For starters, we had the shrimp tostada Louie. This trio of 3" tostadas were piled high with tiny shrimp, avocado & tidbits of white onion lightly bathed in a thin mayo sauce. Yumm! We also shared the traditional ceviche - a tall goblet overflowing with white fish, shrimp, green pepper, onion and a zippy lime sauce. I was hoping to have a serving of Joe's special ceviche with an Asian twist, but they had none left for the day. Our traditional ceviche was great.
For my dinner, I chose the mahi mahi. The grilled, very fresh mahi mahi arrived resting on the fonda rice (seasoned with tomatoes, peppers, garlic & onion) and a side of over sized red beans. Cilantro, sliced radishes, white onion and a tiny mound of the absolute freshest pico de gallo dressed the platter.
Guillermo was our server this evening. His huge smile and friendly personality added to our relaxing, flavor packed evening. His suggestions on this visit, as well as prior visits, are always spot-on.
Again, I recommend a roof top table. I take every opportunity I can to enjoy dining under the stars in the tropics!

BLUE SEAS BEACH CLUB CAFE - Puerto Vallarta
After 3 visits in the past 5 months, I would have expected some improvements and excitement to have been added to the small, uninteresting menu. The "postcard" size menu is in significant contrast to the casually elegant finishes - long flowing white drapes, comfy chairs, unobstructed views of Banderas Bay & more eye candy than one could imagine. My friends, David & Jose, joined me for lunch. We had high hopes for a sexy lunch but were quickly let down.
I ordered the grilled chicken breast sandwich on 3 different visits - all 3 times it failed. You may be thinking that I should have tried something else. It is difficult to choose from such an abbreviated menu. Each time hoping it would be right... no luck. Too much dry bread, chicken that lacked seasoning and the attempt at the "fancy mayo" failed miserably. However, the one tiny positive is the hot & crispy french fries. But french fries are a easy, expected side to a sandwich. Why not an interesting potato salad, crispy jicama sticks with a citrus squeeze, sliced radishes or apples?
The staff is very accommodating and willing to make "things right", but there is only so much that can be done with bland, boring food. Arturo and Frederico's never ending smiles, laughs and sexy personalities make it worth a visit knowing the best part of the menu will be a libation from the bar.
The ambiance and promo materials tease one into believing you will experience much more than you will ever get, at least at the cafe, that is!

ROBERTO'S - Puerto Vallarta
Grab a table near the large open windows to the sidewalk - too many interesting characters!
I met my very good friend, Jaime, for breakfast. He went with a traditional American breakfast of pancakes, eggs over-easy and sausage. He really enjoyed his breakfast platter.
I chose the chicken stuffed crepes topped with a chipotle sauce. The three crepes were filled with chunked chicken breast, diced white onion, tomato, and minced jalapeno. The very light, creamy chipotle sauce added a nice bit of heat. The fantastic crepes sprinkled with white cheese, came with 2 small wedges of watermelon.
The crepes and the bottomless cup of strong dark coffee were an incredible breakfast combination for $75p or $6USD.

TRATTORIA MICHEL – Puerto Vallarta
Michel has created a very comfortable, casually elegant, space in shades of white with splashes of color coming from the fresh flowers and candles on the tables. Bruno & I sat at a table on the wrap-around patio enjoying a tropical evening in paradise.
Oscar, our very attentive server, took my “request” seriously – my slightly dirty Belvedere martini was never empty! Perfect every time.
I began another incredible meal at Michel’s with the jumbo sea scallops. These delicious morsels, marinated in honey and Spanish paprika, were quick seared creating a mouthwatering, caramelized crust. These succulent scallops were served on a bed of organic wild baby greens and sliced grape tomatoes.
My second course was the traditional Insulata Caprese. The thin slices of cow’s milk mozzarella (made fresh daily) are layered with slices of locally grown, juicy beefsteak tomatoes. This wonderful, light salad is drizzled with extra virgin olive oil, aged balsamic vinegar and a sprinkling of coarse sea salt. The dinner guests at the table next to us were also raving about the great simple salad.
Bruno and I decided to share the Bistecca Fiorentina. The 1-kilo bone-in, perfectly aged and marbled steak was wonderfully seasoned with rosemary, roasted garlic cloves, sea salt and cracked black pepper. It was grilled to perfection with slightly charred edges. This very traditional Tuscan dish is served over arugula and a few lemon wedges. Flawless!
We also shared a side of spinach sautéed in extra virgin olive oil; the spinach was served slightly dry with a few tidbits of roasted garlic and grated parmigiano reggiano.
Michel and Oscar’s charm and hospitality on each of my visits have made Trattoria Michel’s one of my 3 favorites in Puerto Vallarta since Boca Bento’s move to Mismaloya, 5 miles south of Vallarta.

OUD HOLLAND - Amsterdam
For my starter, I chose the Kippe/Groenstesoep (Chicken Soup). The clear chicken broth had the most intense chicken flavor with just a hint of bay leaves. The tidbits of potato, carrot and chicken breast were not overcooked – still slightly chewy. The slivers of white onion, celery, & bits of parsley enhanced this incredible soup that was served in a large metal soup cup.
I had the Ptuttelpot (Beef Stew) as my main dish. The large pieces of beef simmer for 8 hours prior to serving. Chunks of carrot and onion, bay leaves and chives are added near the end of the “simmer” creating a thick, very satisfying meal. The beef stew is served in a large flat metal bowl-like plate with a mound of coarsely mashed potatoes. This incredible stew is served with a side of slightly sweet carrot balls in a light butter sauce as well as a side of steamed brussel sprouts tossed in butter and a hint of garlic. The veggies are to be eaten as sides and not combined with the stew.
A small metal bowl of slightly tart applesauce that comes as another side with the stew is the perfect end to this fantastic meal. This amazing stew & sides are only 16,40 EUR (approx $21 USD).
Geyser, the café’s house cat, quietly moves among the diners for some TLC. Believe me, this cat is not deprived of attention! No… he is not a tabletop jumper.
As I was eating my way through Amsterdam I quickly learned that if you want to add a tip to your card, you need to let your server know up front or leave money on the table. Adding it when you sign the receipt is not an option at any of the eateries where I dined. Another learning I had is that soda refills are not free and often cost 2,50 EUR (approx $3.20 USD) each.
Robert, my extremely friendly server, was always ready to answer a question or provide a suggestion in perfect English with a very sexy accent and a huge smile!
I asked 2 different hotel concierges for their recommendation of a great local café serving outstanding Dutch food – both told me to try Oud Holland. I agree!

AL ARGENTINO STEAKHOUSE – Amsterdam
The steakhouse has a western ambiance with stressed barn wood, wagon wheels, hides, and wooden tables & chairs. The long narrow dining space has a few tables near the front, a tiny bar that may seat 4 or 5, a partially open kitchen and another small dining space at the rear. Aah, the aroma of the grill caused my tasted buds to jump in anticipation of a great steak dinner.
I began with a hot appetizer – the Empandas de Carne (meat pastries). The 2 piping hot, flaky puffs were filled with minced steak, onion, kalamata olives and a touch of dried red pepper. These tasty puffs arrived resting shredded carrots and red cabbage. Excellent!
For dinner, I ordered Bife de Chorizo (sirloin steak). The slightly charred steak was grilled to perfection and crusted with minced garlic and black pepper. I ordered a side of the Chimmichurri sauce; it did not have enough parsley and garlic and too much onion, red & green pepper for me. The Seasoned Rice was long grain white rice exploding with the flavors of paprika, onion, cumin and flecks of red pepper. I could not resist a side of the Maiz a la Parrilla (grilled corn). The “caramelized” smoky corncob came with melted butter for dipping. A fantastic meal for $29 EUR or approximately $36 USD (food only).
Al Argentino features a short but nice list of wines and liquors from Argentina.
It was very sexy to hear Mathieus, my stunning & very friendly Dutch server, describe the Argentinean dishes. While I was dining, I heard Swedish, German, Chinese, Spanish, English and obviously Dutch – international diners in a very cosmopolitan city. The background music was a relaxing blend of Spanish and English singers.
Walking through the streets surrounding Dam Square, I was surprised by the number of Argentinean and Indonesian restaurants. It seemed like there was one on every block. This is one Argentinean eatery you should not pass by!

GREENDAYZ COFFEE - Amsterdam
During my stay in Amsterdam, I made numerous trips to Greendayz for a caffeine fix. Franc recommended the “Classic Coffee” – a double shot of espresso with a small amount of filtered water. Delicious! This mellow, slightly smoky coffee quickly became my beverage of choice.
My sweet selection was their fantastic mocha chip muffin; it was a baseball-size handful of heaven. This super moist muffin had a subtle espresso flavor and slivers or dark chocolate. The muffin’s crystallized sugar top was incredible. I learned that the addition of a bit of applesauce was their secret to the unbelievably moist muffins. I admit I ate several.
The staff of this very comfortable, welcoming café is quick to answer questions about this amazing city, give directions, and make suggestions to those coming through the door. I always left with a smile and a hot cup of “Classic”!

ARCHIE'S WOK - Puerto Vallarta
I began with the “Spicy Life Salad” – it was great. The thin slices of mixed vegetables were very fresh & crunchy; the light dressing with the right amount of zing was outstanding. A perfect start to what I expected to be a good meal.
I can not say the same for the Chicken & Almond entrée I ordered for dinner. The abundance of larger-than-necessary chunks of celery and onion left little room for anything else. The 4 tidbits of chicken breast I found buried among the carrot, jicama, onion, mushroom & celery had a steamed texture – certainly not seared in a wok. The light sauce attempting to hold this dish together lacked flavor and failed. I should have ordered another salad & skipped the chicken entrée.
The restaurant was surprisingly busy; it maybe that many of the dinner guests (tourists) find it a “safe” choice. Not in my opinion – there is a plethora of reasonable priced dining options in PV... keeping walking.

HACIENDA SAN ANGEL – Puerto Vallarta
Hacienda San Angel is a collection of villas at the base of the Sierra Madre Mountains overlooking Banderas Bay. These amazing villas create 14 elegant suites impeccably restored with exquisite antiques and all the modern amenities you would expect to find in a member of "Small Luxury Hotels of the World." The immaculate gardens, 3 pristine pools and a roof-top jacuzzi are a breathtaking treat. No detail too insignificant - the hand soap in the restroom near the breakfast terrace resembles individual yellow rose petals! This eden is hidden behind very high walls running along a narrow cobblestone street tucked in the hill above the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Friends from the States flew in to spend some time with me in my corner of paradise! This would be my second visit to the property; I knew they would be impressed with this incredible collection of villas. It was only in the last 2+ years that the restaurant was opened to the public. Until then, you needed to be an overnight guest of the villa to dine.
It had sporadically rained the hour before our reservation at 8p. We were asked to wait in a large antique filled living room. When we arrived, I was surprised that our table was not ready. After a 15-minutes wait, we were taken to the 2nd floor terrace dining room believing our table was ready. At this point, I learned our table was still on the exposed terrace. It needed to be reset under the extended roof. We were left to stand among diners as the staff readied our table.
We arrived to find an elegant outdoor dining room of guests from around the world. I could easily hear 4 or 5 different languages being spoken as I walked through the dining terrace. When we were taken to our table, our chairs were still wet. This was very awkward. I would have expected, at least, the offer of a beverage while we waited for the second time.
We began with a wonderful bottle (actually 2) of a Mexican cab-merlot from the Casa Madero vineyards. Slightly sweet with a hint of black cherry. Soon after a basket of fresh, hot bread arrived... the anticipation began to build.
I began with the Lobster salad & grilled watermelon – the petite mound of greens mixed with shredded lobster hid a center of chopped lobster. The thin slice of watermelon was sprinkled with paprika and quickly grilled. Simply divine! For my next course, I chose the shrimp coconut soup. The pureed shrimp and light coconut milk base had a single scrumptious shrimp dumpling in the center of the bowl.
For my entrée, I selected the Angus filet mignon, cooked to perfection! The slightly charred filet accompanied a stacked serving of sautéed spinach leaves and paper thin slices of roasted garlic resting on thin slices of white fingerling potatoes. This is the first and only time I have found individuals leaves of sautéed spinach to be painstakingly stacked prior to serving. A port reduction sauce and a poblano chili sauce were artistically placed on my plate. Superb!
For dessert, I had the crème brulee with a slightly sweet wild berry sauce; again a gorgeous presentation of a creamy delight!
My friends and I agree; the meal was incredible.
Our table was the last to leave. I found it odd and rude to have had the wonderful background music disappear and the staff resetting the dining room and moving furniture while we finished a dinner that was close to $400 USD. Apparently, the owner with her incredible attention to detail was not on the property this evening. Yes, I will return, but with different expectations.

KITTICHAI - New York City (SoHo)
This incredible eatery is a very modern, sophisticated space of wood, water & orchids. The dining room surrounds a square reflection pool of floating orchids. Individual orchid blooms are suspended above the pool. The subtle and artistic lighting add a beautiful elegant touch.
My friends, Julie and Raja, and I selected the 9 course tasting menu.
Our feast included:
fishcakes with cucumber & red onion chutney;
“Meing” tuna tartare served in limestone tartlets with peanuts, ginger, lime and a sweet chili sauce;
Northern Thai beef salad with very thin slices of very lean beef, Chinese long beans and roasted sticky rice powder;
crispy whole fish resting in a very light ginger curry sauce;
a salad of pan-seared hake dtom yum and Shanghai shoots and basil;
sautéed gai-lan in lemon grass and chicken stock with garlic and ginger (baby bok choy, orange peppers and tomatoes);
sliced grilled chicken breast rubbed with bird eye chili and Chinese long beans and cilantro;
pineapple braised short ribs with a delicate green curry sauce, Thai eggplant and sweet basil. This delicacy was served over fluffy steamed jasmine rice.
Finally for dessert, we had a flourless Valrhona chocolate cake wrapped in a banana leaf with a fresh cream & vanilla bean mousse. Our second dessert was the banana spring rolls – a translucent spring roll dough wrapped around bananas with cored out centers filled with chocolate and nuts – complete with a dollop of burnt honey ice cream and dusted with course granules of brunt sugar.
One word – SPECTACULAR !
The restaurant offers a full menu and bar, as well as, another tasting menu with 13 courses. The extremely friendly & accommodating staff were invisibly perfect from the moment we entered the restaurant! At $69 per person, the tasting menu is a wonderful way to experience the magic coming from the kitchen of Kittichai.

THE COFFEE SHOP & BAR – New York City (Union Square)
The Coffee Shop is a classic American diner with a Brazilian twist. This loud, bright diner serves a sprinkling of expected diner fare but the focus is on Brazilian cuisine. It is open 23 hours per day for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Julie and I had spent most of the day walking and window shopping our way through on the the greatest cities. We needed a break; I remembered a recommendation from friends and found ourselves with a short wait for a table at Coffee Shop in Union Square.
It was only appropriate we start our lunch with caiprinhas – the classic Brazilian concoction of rum & lime. We decided to order several dishes and share. We started with the chilled carrot and ginger soup. We actually had 2 orders of the Pao de Queijo; the bite size pieces of Romano cheese bread gently baked to a delicate crusty outside and a slightly undercooked gooey center. These were truly cheesy puffs of heaven!
Pastels de Cameron were mouthwatering Bahian dumplings filled with tidbits of shrimp, celery & onion. The “centerpiece” of our lunch was the Sopa de Peixe Bahia – seafood chowder with a very light, fresh tomato seafood stock. The large soap bowl had a mound of carrots, tomatoes, green peppers, grilled tuna, shrimp, crab, skin-on white potatoes, corn, celery, cilantro and garlic. These al dente tidbits were swimming in a delicate tomato fish stock. Yumm!
Go for the incredible, reasonably priced Brazilian food & the eye candy! The elevated noise level makes conversation both with your dining companion and wait staff can be challenging.
